After getting about five pounds worth of vegetables (tomatoes and cukes) from one of my friends’ mom (they live out in the country and have a vegetable garden), I had to go to the grocery store today to get a loaf of bread for tomato sandwiches, and white vinegar for a pasta salad, as I can’t figure out what else to do with them (I don’t like cukes or tomatoes cooked). Luckily, I also got a call from the temp agency offering me a two day thing starting tomorrow, so while I was out I stopped by Kinko’s and faxed some forms in for it (confidentiality stuff, it’s a hospital) and yes, good stuff.
I have always loved vegetables, from a young age. While I was quite picky about trying new things, I don’t recall my mother ever having to threaten me to make me eat my vegetables. Broccoli is my favorite, steamed just enough to be soft enough to bite through, but not mushy. I don’t like anything on it, it tastes good by itself. Cauliflower is also good, as are raw carrots, celery, cucumbers and tomatoes. My mother never made brussel sprouts when I was a kid, because she hated them as a kid, but I’ve had them as an adult and they’re quite good, as long as you don’t eat them too often (and fresh is way better than frozen, moreso than other veggies).
One of the things that rankles me most about being a fat person is the assumption of eating habits. No, I’m not eating a salad because I’m dieting. I’m eating it because I enjoy salads. XP These carrot sticks are not for show, damn it, I just like carrots. I would eat fresh veggies all the time if they weren’t so expensive compared to other foods (I eat a lot of pasta and cereal because it’s cheap and I’m poor). In fact, when my friend’s mom offered me a box of veggies, it was all I could do not to squee like a fangirl, because I haven’t had good, fresh, tasty tomatoes in forever, and they’re my favorite summer vegetable (I would live on tomato sandwiches if I could). And cucumbers are my second favorite. So I was pretty damn excited about that. Now I just have to make sure I don’t let them go bad.
For those who are curious, the pasta salad I’m planning to use is this one. Mostly because it’s easy and requires no cooking besides the pasta (which I can handle), and has both cukes and tomatoes. Of course, I was an idiot and totally forgot to get dill weed, but I think I can manage.
I’ve always kind of had the viewpoint that if you can’t enjoy a food by itself, you don’t really enjoy that food. If you have to have cheese sauce slathered over your broccoli, you can’t really claim to enjoy broccoli by itself. That’s a bit of an elitist view, and I realize that, but I just don’t see the point of forcing yourself to eat stuff you don’t like. I genuinely enjoy things like broccoli and potatoes on their own, as well as in things or with sauces/flavoring attached. But if I only ate broccoli in a heavy cream sauce, I wouldn’t claim to enjoy broccoli. I can’t stand raw onions, but I like them in onion rings, so I don’t claim to like onions. *Shrug* That’s just my opinion, though.
Anyway, I’m gonna go get that pasta started now, and start chopping up some cukes and tomatoes. X3
